San Francisco Courtyard

Balanced between private and public, this residential project cast aside the notion and need for large entertaining spaces.  Nestled deep within a block of homes in the heart of the San Francisco’s Presidio Heights neighborhood, Merge Studio took on the task of designing a courtyard space with enhanced privacy.  With the addition of a small fire lounge and intimate seating, the patio space was developed as a perfect terrace for relaxing, entertaining and dining within the lush garden surround.

A full service cook station, equipped with sink, outdoor fridge, grill and smoker – and all set within a 2” continuous slab of true bluestone - is wrapped in Thermory to match the new decking and for additional durability in the Bay Area’s traditionally wet weather.

Amidst the urban bustle this setting is restful and quiet, the landscape refined with time-tested and long-term materials.  Stone, Thermory and cor-ten steel, a blend of warmth and cool hues set off by a colorful and verdant perennial garden.  Rich with color and textural accents, the garden delivers subtle zones for a friendly and welcoming space.
